Announced by thAnnounced by the Dayton Culture and Arts Group on Meetup.com:On Wednesday, September 19, at 7PM, at Dayton Avenue Church, Jim Heynen will read excerpts from his new book, The Fall of Alice. Best known for his short-short stories about “the boys”, Jim Heynen has published widely as a writer of poems, novels, nonfiction and short fiction. His stories about the boys have been featured often on National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered”, as well as on radio in both Sweden and Denmark. The most recent collection of these stories, The Boys House, was named Editor’s Choice for Best Books of 2001 by The Bloomsbury Review, Newsday, and Booklist. He lives in St. Paul, Minnesota. Among his 20 published works are Notes from Custer (poems and translations), Sioux Songs (translations), A Suitable Church (poems), Fishing For Chickens: Stories About Rural Youth, Sunday Afternoon on the Porch (text for Everett Kuntz photographs taken of small-town Iowa, 1939-42 and The Fall of Alice K (a biracial love story of a precocious 17-year-old farm girl and a teenage Hmong immigrant. “Among the immigrants are a Hmong family, whose teenage son, Nickson (named for the hero of the Vietnam War, President Richard Nixon), captures Alice's attention and awakens her passion. Alice's navigation of the rough seas of first love, oncoming adulthood and a family crisis might be an effective metaphor for what the larger community is facing at the turn of the millennium -- but it doesn't read like a metaphor. It is, in keeping with Heynen's considerable gifts, painstakingly particular, immediate and moving.” - Ellen Aikins in the Mpls. Star & Tribune
